The NYPD judge is recommending firing Officer Daniel Pantaleo over the 2014 choking death of Eric Garner. As you likely know, there have been widespread calls and protests from Garner supporters against the NYPD officer, accused of using a deadly chokehold on him, to be fired.
Both sides in the case, the attorney for Officer Pantaleo and the Civilian Complaint Review Board, have about eleven days to respond, then the judge will deliver a final recommendation. From there, NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill makes the final decision.
In the meantime, the NYPD says they are suspending Officer Pantaleo effective immediately. The New York City police officer's union says the decision to recommend Pantaleo be fired over the Garner case “represents one of the department's saddest days.”
