Former Carolina Panthers center Ryan Kalil announced that he is coming out of retirement yesterday to play for the New York Jets.
And that tells me that he either really loves football or really hates retirement. But regardless, the 34-tear-old signed a one year, $8.4-million deal yesterday to bolster a problematic Gang Green offensive line.
The Jets reached out to Kalil a few weeks ago to gauge his interest in coming out of retirement. They believe Kalil's experience will be a help to second-year quarterback Sam Darnold, who still is learning the nuances of coach Adam Gase'soffense.
Nick Mangold, who started 11 seasons at center for the Jets before retiring after the 2016 season, tweeted his endorsement of the move. The Jets have largely been unsettled at the position since Mangold retired.
Kalil is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro and had just retired earlier this year after a 12-year run with the Panthers.
This marks the first significant acquisition for GM Joe Douglas, who was hired in June.
