A powerful storm left more than 200,000 people in the dark in New Jersey on Tuesday morning.
JCP&L was reporting 198,000 outages, mostly in Monmouth and Ocean County. PSE&G had another 54,000 outages.
Rain fell at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, bringing down tree limbs and power lines. The state said because of the damage, it could be several days before some people get their power back.
The storm was also felt in New York City, where roads became flooded and 6,000 people lost power in Brooklyn and Queens.
That follows a weekend heat wave that knocked out power for 50,000 people. Con Edison intentionally took 30,000 customers offline, saying it was necessary to make repairs and avoid an even worse scenario.
Mayor Bill de Blasio blasted Con Ed over the outages.
“No answers whatsoever as to why this happened and what is being done to ensure it will not happen again. This was obviously a predictable situation and therefor preventable,” de Blasio said.
The outages came after a blackout in Midtown the previous weekend that knocked out power to more than 70,000 people.
