The MTA is moving to ban riders who repeatedly commit crimes on the subways and buses.
“We need to get to a really, truly controlled environment in which everyone’s welcome but you’ve got to adhere to certain levels of behavior,” NYC Transit President Andy Byford said.
The agency’s Transit Committee approved a resolution that calls on the state and law enforcement to impose such a ban. The full MTA Board will vote on Wednesday and it has the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“This is a common sense issue, and the New York State Legislature and criminal justice system have a responsibility to work with the MTA to ensure these perpetrators - who repeatedly target victims on our subways and buses - cannot continue this abhorrent behavior,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement.
It’s unclear how such a policy would be enforced.
