A former correction officer has been arrested for lying about his income so he could take advantage of low-income housing.
Mark Smith was charged with grand larceny, perjury, petit larceny, and falsifying business records after he was caught living in section 8 housing while making almost $80,000 a year.
According to the New York Daily News, Smith was caught providing old pay-stubs and receipts from a job he held at Verizon to the NYC Housing Authority instead of his better paying job with the Department of Corrections, a move that enabled him to receive $28,593 in rent subsidies.
NYC Department Of Investigation Commissioner Margaret Garnett told the New York Daily News, "This defendant, by hiding his employment from the city, allegedly stole tens of thousands of dollars in rental subsidies that could have gone to legitimate tenants in need of the assistance."
Smith could face up to seven years in jail if he is convicted of all charges.
