NYPD Supports Banning Sex Offenders From The Subway

Top New York City Police Department officials are coming out in support of a proposal that would ban repeat sexual offenders from the subway system.

“It is unacceptable to have predators - when we know exactly what they are doing - and we are more worried about the predators than the victims of these heinous crimes,” Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said.

On Tuesday, Governor Cuomo called for perpetrators who commit two sexual offenses in the subway system to be banned. Shea said these are people who seek out women and children.

“This is not individuals riding the subway. This is individuals that hunt on the subway,” Shea said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is supporting the plan. He said he’s working with state lawmakers to get a deal done.

“We believe legislation will be very, very helpful and we’re engaging with folks in Albany to see if we can get that done,” de Blasio said.

It’s unclear how the policy would be enforced.
