Measles Outbreak Leaves 44 Unvaccinated Children Banned From School

A measles outbreak at Green Meadow Waldorf School in White Plains has prompted a judge to ban 44 unvaccinated students from returning to class for at least three weeks.

The decision of the judge was made during the first round of a lawsuit filed against the Rockland Health Department by the parents of the 44 children being held out of school.

The lawsuit claims that Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Rupert's ruling violates the families' religious objections to vaccinations and is unnecessary because the measles cases, for the most part, have been confined to insular Hasidic Jewish communities.

A parent of a 4-year-old preschooler who is being held out of class told the Journal News "Preventing my child from being with his class, his teacher, his classroom, has had a significant social and psychological impact."
