Former Mets pitcher Tom Seaver, considered the best player in the franchise’s history, has been diagnosed with dementia.
He will step away from public life as he battles the disease.Seaver was a 3-time Cy Young award winner and led the Mets to the 1969 World Series.
"We knew we had a chance to win every time Seaver and (Jerry) Koosman came into the ballgame and they pitched for us. We knew that day the Mets could beat anybody," Ed Kranepool told WOR's "Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning."
Seaver won 311 games with a career ERA of 2.86 and 3,640 strikeouts. His number 41 is retired by the Mets and Seaver was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992.
“We’ve been in contact with the Seaver family and are aware of his health situation. Although he’s unable to attend the ’69 Anniversary, we are planning to honor him in special ways and have included his family in our plans. Our thoughts are with Tom, Nancy and the entire Seaver Family,” Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said in a statement.
