Three people are dead after two Long Island Rail Road trains slammed into a vehicle in Westbury.
The driver was apparently trying to beat the train at the School Street crossing on Tuesday night.
"The gates were down. The lights were flashing. We've confirmed that they were functioning. Witnesses have said the vehicle went around the gates at which point the train that was leaving heading eastbound and the vehicle collided,” MTA President Phillip Eng said
After being hit by the eastbound train leaving the station, the vehicle was then struck by a westbound train that was traveling at a much higher speed.
Three people inside the vehicle were killed, while 7 train passengers were injured when the train derailed.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has promised a full investigation.
"As we continue to gather information surrounding the incident, my heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones. In the wake of this tragedy, I am calling for a full investigation into the collision, including with the complete cooperation of the MTA, State Police, local law enforcement and the NTSB," Governor Cuomo said in a statement.
