A special election is being held in New York City on Tuesday with voters choosing a new Public Advocate.
Seventeen candidates are vying for the position, including former City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Councilman Jumaane Williams. The office has been vacant since Letitia James became New York State Attorney General.
The Public Advocate position has little official power, but the elected official would become mayor if Mayor Bill de Blasio were to leave office for some reason.
The winner will have to run again in November.
Turnout is expected to be low.
