The NYPD has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google, telling them to remove a feature from Waze that tells drivers where there are police checkpoints.
StreetsBlog says the Waze apps shows the locations of checkpoints and “speed traps.”
“The NYPD has become aware that the Waze Mobile application … currently permits the public to report DWI checkpoints throughout New York City and map these locations,” NYPD Acting Deputy Commissioner for Legal Matters Ann Prunty said in a letter.
The letter goes on to say that individuals who post locations of DWI checkpoints “may be engaging in criminal conduct.”
“The posting of such information for public consumption is irresponsible since it only serves to aid impaired and intoxicated drivers to evade checkpoints and encourage reckless driving,” the letter said.
The NYPD said it would “pursue all legal remedies” to stop the information from being posted.
