Mayor Bill de Blasio says he’ll offer details about a plan to offer low-income New Yorkers half-priced Metro Cards in the coming days.
The “Fair Fares” program was supposed to launch on New Year’s Day, but it has yet to take effect. The mayor said the plan is still being worked on.
“We are sober about the fact that sometimes you’ve seen government efforts where people have put forward big, bold new things but the specifics haven’t been worked out and people have a satisfying experience. We wanted to get it right from the beginning. So, when we announce in the next few days, it will be fully ready for the first piece,” de Blasio said.
The mayor said $106 million is being devoted to the program and it’s a new way of empowering low-income New Yorkers.
“This is a brand new way of addressing income inequality, a brand new way of empowering low-income New Yorkers. It’s about to begin in a matter of days and I think it’s going to make a huge difference,” de Blasio said.
City Comptroller Scott Stringer is expected to speak out on Thursday, asking for answers about the program.
