The NYPD has increased security in New York City ahead of tonight’s annual Halloween parade in the Village.
Officials said there are no direct threats against the parade, but they’re taking extra precautions because of the pipe bombs that were sent in the mail and last weekend’s synagogue shooting that left 11 dead.
“Do to the fact of some recent incidents that we've had within the last weeks with suspicious packages as well as the incident that happened in Pittsburgh, there is a level of concern,” Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison said.
It was also one year ago that 8 people were killed in a terror attack on the West Side Highway. A man in a rented truck slammed into a crowd of people on a bike path.
“I want to commend the people of our great city, because in the immediate aftermath no one was complacent, no one was defeated and we saw the strength of our resolve later that evening with the very large crowds that participated in the Halloween parade,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill said.
There will be extra uniformed and undercover police officers on the parade route, which runs up 6th Avenue from Spring Street to West 16th Street. The NYPD will also be placing a number of barrier trucks and bollards along the route.
One million people are expected to attend the parade.
