Governor Andrew Cuomo has unveiled a $13 billion plan to significantly upgrade John F. Kennedy Airport.
The project includes $12 billion in private funding and will the building of two new international terminals, resulting in an additional four million square feet of space. That will increase the airport's capacity by 15 million passengers per year.
"While leaders in Washington talk about investing in infrastructure, we're actually doing it at historic levels and the transformation of JFK Airport into a 21st century transportation hub will ensure New York remains the nation's front door to the world," Governor Cuomo said.
The project also includes modern amenitities, state-of-the-art security and better road access to the airport.
"This historic investment to modernize JFK Airport and the surrounding transportation network will not only ease travel through this major hub, but it will ensure JFK joins the ranks as one of the finest airports in the world," Cuomo said.
The first new gates are expected to open in 2023. Final completed is scheduled for 2025.
