A joyous wedding celebration was brought to a screeching halt when a sword-wielding man attacked and slashed a bridesmaid.
Carlos Mejia, a patron of the New Jersey hotel where the wedding reception took place encountered the wedding party near the lobby elevators. After congratulating the new couple, Mejia asked the group if anyone had a cigarette he could borrow. When members of the wedding party told the man no one smoked he stormed off down the hall to his room.
Hotel employees and witnesses told police that moments after Mejia stormed off he returned with a large sword and began swinging it at the group. During the alleged sword attack a bridesmaid was slashed across the arm and several other members of the group were threatened.
According to an article in the New York Post, hotel guests quickly overpowered Mejia and held him until the police arrived. Police records indicate that Mejia was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the alleged assault.
A hotel spokesperson said Mejia was in town taking care of his hedge fund business.
