A woman has been shot and killed by police officers in Queens after allegedly lunging at them with a knife.
Police responded to a 911 call on Monday night about a burglary on 69th Street. When cops arrived, the woman allegedly pulled a knife of them.
“At some point during the time in the apartment - which was a total of 50 seconds from the time the officers entered the front of the apartment to shots were fired - the 54-year-old woman came at the officers with a knife and lunged at them,” Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said.
Officers fired three times, striking the woman in the torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A knife was recovered.
“This is a tragedy all the way around. Our officers receive extensive training, but what you saw here tonight is how quickly things can develop,” Shea said.
It’s unclear why the woman lunged at officers with a knife or why she called 911 in the first place. The NYPD is continuing to investigate.
