Signal Problems Caused Big Subway Problems in August

A new report claims there was only one rush hour morning in August that wasn’t disrupted by signal problems.

The Riders Alliance said of the 23 morning rush hours in August, only August 23rd didn’t have any signal problems.  There were problems every other weekday morning between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.

“Every one of those signal malfunctions throws thousands of people’s daily lives into chaos.  In a functional transit system, that would be a rare event that merits an apology.  In 2018 New York, it has become routine,” said John Raskin, Executive Director of the Riders Alliance.

The “D” and “R” trains had the most delays with 16 each.  Of those delays, 11 were caused by signal problems and another 5 were mechanical issues.  The "N" train had the next most delays with 14 total.

The problems come as the MTA moves forward with plans to upgrade the signals.  However, that plan could take years before it’s in place.

“The days of stop-gap measures have to be over.  It’s time for Governor Cuomo and members of the state legislature to pass congestion pricing and fund the MTA’s Fast Forward plan, so we can rebuild the transit system and end the pain for millions of New Yorkers who rely on it every day,” Raskin said.
