Governor Cuomo has easily survived a primary challenge from Cynthia Nixon in the race for governor.
Cuomo won around 65 percent of the vote, beating Nixon by about 30 points. Nixon conceded defeat on Thursday night, but claimed she moved the governor to the left and said voters need to start electing better Democrats.
“It is not just enough to be better than Donald Trump. We have to give people something to show up and vote for,” Nixon said.
Governor Cuomo was silent after his win. He skipped his own victory party, choosing to return to Albany after voting in Westchester County earlier in the day.
After voting, the governor criticized the media when asked what he would do if he lost the primary.
“I’m going to become a journalist and then just second guess everybody else because that’s a lot easier,” Cuomo said.
Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul also won a primary matchup against City Councilman Jumaane Williams in her bid for another term. Public Advocate Letitia James won a 4-way Democratic primary in the race for Attorney General.
“It was about that man in the White House who can’t go a day without threatening our fundamental rights,” James said.
In the State Senate, Aslessandra Biaggi beat longtime Senator Jeff Klein. Socialist Julia Salazar also won, defeating Senator Martin Dilan.
