Lawyers who pursue frivolous lawsuits against members of the NYPD are about to get hit with financial sanctions.
The legal action targets lawyers who often sue police officers accused of misconduct by alleged repeat offenders. The NYC Law Department released a report that showed that bogus cases filed against the NYPD are a huge drain on taxpayer's time and money.
A Manhattan federal judge tossed a case that was filed against the NYPD because, according to court papers, the lawyers for the complainant still filed suit even after they were told by the NYC Law Department that the arrest never happened and the alleged subsequent criminal case did not exist.
Detective David Terrell, a member of the NYPD since 2002, is suing the city for $175 million dollars. He is still on modified duty after being hit with several misconduct complaints.
Detective Terrell told the New York Post that he's glad they're seeking to punish the frivolous suits but worries it's too little too late.
Terrell added, "I am glad but I want more. I want a lot more. I don't think they should even be practicing law; this should have been a long, long time ago."
