Liberty Island Evacuated After Propane Tanks Catch Fire

Three propane tanks caught fire on Liberty Island Monday, forcing authorities to evacuate the state park.

One worker was hurt in the blaze, which broke out around 11:50 a.m., according to FDNY officials.

Hundreds of tourists were herded back to the ferry docks as crews fought the fire.

Live videos showed fire near a dumpster on the island, near where a new museum is being built. What sparked the blaze is currently unknown.

Monday's incident marks the second time this summer the Liberty Island has been evacuated. On the Fourth of July, a protester climbed the Statue of Liberty as part of a demonstration against Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The protester spent hours around the statue's feet as NYPD officials tried to coax her down.

The summer is the height of New York's tourism season, with people coming from all over the world to visit landmarks, including the State of Liberty.
