Mets Fall 12-4 In Opener Vs. Braves, Harvey Struggles Early

  • Matt Harvey got the start and was behind the 8-ball early. Freddie Freeman got an RBI sac fly early, then Kurt Suzuki stroked a rainmaking home run down the line to make it 3-0 Braves after one.
  • Harvey had another bad inning in the third when Nick Markakis stroked an RBI single and Preston Tucker roped a two RBI double and the Mets found themselves down 6-0.
  • Todd Frazier got one of those back with a solo home run in the top of the 5th.
  • Matt Wisler was called up from the minors to make the start in place of Anibal Sanchez, who suffered a freak injury while warming up.
  • Wisler was spectacular, going 7 innings, giving up two hits, striking out eight and walking no one.
  • Harvey’s day was done after 6 innings. He struggled in the first 2 1/3rd, but settled down and retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.
  • Jerry Blevins came in and got a rare opportunity to pitch a full inning, got the first two batters, then gave up back to back singles, and walked Kurt Suzuki. Preston Tucker brought them all home with a 3 RBI double to make the score 9-1, and effectively end any hopes of a Mets comeback.
  • Adrian Gonzalez had a solo HR in the 8th, Nimmo walked with the bases loaded and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a sac fly to close the game to 10-4 after 8 innings.
  • Braves tacked on runs in the bottom of the 8th to make it 12-4.
