The New Jersey Assembly has approved a package of measures that will strengthen the state’s gun control laws.
Six bills were passed, including one that would reduce maximum capacity of magazines from 15 to 10. One would expand background checks and another would ban armor-piercing bullets.
“The energy of the tens of thousands of New Jerseyans this past weekend demanding action on gun safety continues today. I applaud the General Assembly for passing these commonsense gun measures to protect our communities and families,” Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement.
The measures now head to the State Senate. Governor Murphy has promised to sign them into law if they reach his desk.
“The people of New Jersey have demanded we act, and we must,” Murphy said.
Governor Murphy has pushed for tougher gun control laws since the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. He also announced a plan to improve school safety and has teamed up with other governors to share resources.
Murphy has also called on the federal government to strengthen its gun laws.
