Teachers in Jersey City are back in the classroom on Monday after going on strike.
The union and board of education reached a tentative contract agreement on Sunday night after more than 13 hours of negotiations. No specifics have been released, but it reportedly addresses both pay and health care costs.
“Glad this came to a resolution and thank you to all the parties for spending 13 hours today together working towards a solution so that tomorrow we can all get back to moving the city forward,” Mayor Steven Fulop tweeted on Sunday.
Teachers went on strike on Friday because of complaints over increasing health care costs. They said those costs were eating into their take home pay and called on the school district to cover more of the cost.
Students had a half day on Friday with substitutes filling in.
The teachers had been working without a contract since September. The deal must still be ratified by the entire union.
