The New York Yankees have long been the powerhouse of Major League Baseball in New York City both in terms of success and financial power. The power scale began to tip the other way once Steve Cohen took ownership of the Mets however and the decision from Juan Soto to leave the Bronx for Queens was a benchmark moment in this city’s baseball history. New York Mets reporter for The Athletic Will Sammon spoke with the WOR Morning Show about the Juan Soto signing and what it means for this organization.
“It’s something that Steve Cohen has sort of built, as far as this team goes, of expectations,” Sammon tells guest host Rory O’Neill. “He has made some good deals for high prized free agents in the past… but not at this level and not for somebody who is still in their prime.”
Sammon believes that despite all the positives the Mets have in their favor, the deciding factor for Soto was ultimately straightforward: “Steve Cohen paid him the most money at the end of the day, and there’s also an opt out after the 5th season so he can cash in again 5 to 6 years from now.”
