A recent state audit done on the Newark school district has found some inconsistencies and potential fraud that is costing taxpayers money. While nobody has been formally accused of committing any crimes, the audit did bring to light a lot of questionable findings and will eventually lead to charges on some level. Larry Mendte of Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning spoke about the audit and what they did to defraud taxpayers and Newark schools.
“On many of the people hired, and there’s 10 in the audit, they didn’t do criminal background checks even though they are required by law,” Mendte said. “They overstated student enrollment by a lot; so they had empty seats in classrooms and they claimed there were people in there to get state funding.”
Mendte believes a similar audit is needed to hold New York City officials accountable: “Could you imagine if they did this kind of audit on New York City schools? I think they would find the same; as a matter of fact I would to see New York City schools and an audit of the overspending.”
