Numbers for crashes and deaths involving e-bikes in New York City are up across the board and many people have been calling for more legislation against the bikes. The city council is aware of the issues and proposed a number of laws that would help protect not only pedestrians, but also the riders as well. Natalie Migliore, WOR Reporter, hit the streets to ask the people of NYC about how the laws could help and what other party needs to take responsibility for the safety issues.
“What happens if there is, god forbid, an accident; whatever company [the drivers] work for should contribute, if not cover them, in some ways,” one person told Migliore. “I think it’s for the safety of both pedestrians and the actually delivery people,” another person told Migliore.
One person believes the safety issues wont be resolved with just some action taken at City Hall: “You can make any number of laws but if they’re no good enforcing mechanism in place, it doesn’t mean anything.”
