Following the capture and extraction of Nicolas Maduro from Venezuela over the weekend, Donald Trump made remarks on the operation and why it occurred. Despite that being standard for the President to inform he public on why the operation took place, the reasons he stated for the move, and the charges brought against Maduro in federal court, don’t exactly line up. Jeffrey Lichtman, high profile criminal defense attorney, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about how the comments by Trump may be detrimental to the case against Maduro.
“Every statement that [Donald Trump] makes can be used by the defense potentially in the trial,” Lichtman told host Larry Mendte. “He’s saying the reasons why he did it; you can sort of use all of those things in crafting your defense to show that this whole thing is fake -- that the reasons why he was arrested weren’t the right ones.”
Lichtman believes the trial being held in New York City may play a part in the trial as well: “Keep in mind that the jury, half of them, based on the numbers of the Mayoral election support a guy like Mamdani who is going to trash this government’s case for the next year or two before this goes to trial.”
