With the mayoral primary in his rearview mirror, Zohran Mamdani can now focus on the next four months and campaign for the mayor’s office. Potential voters may be wary of the message, but the fact remains- he did convince enough voters that he stood out above the rest of the Democrats who wanted to run the city. Former WOR news director Joe Bartlett says the shock waves of Mamdani’s win were felt as far as South Carolina, where many transplanted or retired New Yorkers sat up and took notice. He appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to rationalize the Mamdani mystique.
“I think the point here is it’s easy to dismiss Zohran Mamdani,” Bartlett told host Larry Mendte. “[But] he has tapped into a growing feeling of resentment of the voters in the country and the city. Basically, billionaires are running this thing and the little guy is getting passed over, and maybe not necessarily communism, but a popular movement, I think is under way, and he has tapped into something.”
Bartlett pointed to one other sentiment that Mamdani may be able to exploit to his advantage in November: “The other thing, too, is the political system has been corrupted by money, in my opinion. This is one of my big issues here… the little guy is left out of the equation, and I think Mamdani has tapped into some of that.”
