Will The Tariffs Help Or Hurt U.S. Manufacturing?

When Donald Trump announced his plans to place tariffs on foreign imports into the United States, one of his main goals was to force companies into moving their manufacturing back to America. The President intended to create more jobs for Americans with these plans but there may be side effects that actually hurt more than they help. Rich Lowry, Editor in Chief of National Review, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about the tariffs and the potential downside of them.

“At the end of the day if we have what we currently have in place we’ll lose manufacturing jobs net net,” Lowry told host Larry Mendte. “The experience with the steel and aluminum tariffs the first time around, the first Trump term, the best study suggests that we lose net net manufacturing jobs.”

Lowry believes some tweaking to the tariffs can be done to make them work better: “If you want to tariff big finished goods, that’s one thing, but if you’re tariffing all the stuff that our manufacturers use to build things then you’re hurting yourself.”
