As migrants continue to pour into New York City, Mayor Eric Adams says he can no longer provide suitable housing for everyone.
He’s asking the courts to temporarily suspend the city’s “Right to Shelter” law. That requires the city to provide every homeless person with a bed who asks for one.
“Given that we’re unable to provide care for an unlimited number of people and are already overextended, it is in the best interest of everyone, including those seeking to come to the United States, to be upfront that New York City cannot single-handedly provide care to everyone crossing our border,” Adams said in a statement.
More than 700,000 migrants have arrived in the city since the crisis began. It’s estimated to cost more than $4 billion.
Mayor Adams has attempted to send migrants to neighboring counties, but those efforts have largely been rejected by officials in those counties.
