Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the MTA will spend more than $6 million to put cameras on every train car in the subway system.
The initiative will require buying 5,400 cameras in order to put two on each of the 2,700 subway cars. There will also be an additional 3,800 cameras installed across 130 subway stations.
"I am proud that we will be installing cameras on all Subway cars - expanding our security capabilities, deterring crime, and providing our law enforcement with support,” Governor Hochul said.
The MTA claims subway crime is down 8.6 percent compared to 2019 before the pandemic. However, riders say crime remains a major concern.
