For the first time since December 16th, the number of Covid hospitalizations fell in New Jersey.

The state reported 5,933 total hospitalizations on Thursday, which was down 156 from the day before. That’s still an elevated number, but the decline is providing hope that the state may be moving past the worst of the surge.

The sobering news is that the state reported an increase in the number of cases for the first time in five days. State health officials said they expect the number of daily positive tests to remain above 20,000 for the rest of the month.

The news comes as President Biden announced he was sending military doctors and nurses to University Hospital in Newark to help address problems there caused by an increase in patients and a large number of staffers out sick.
