After a fire in the Bronx that killed 17 people, Mayor Eric Adams is telling New Yorkers about the importance of closing doors.

“This painful moment can turn into a purposeful moment, as we send the right message of something simple as closing the door,” Adams said.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the fire was largely contained to a hallway outside the apartment where the fire started. But because multiple self-closing doors didn’t close, smoke spread throughout the building.

“If you're in a building - an apartment building that has self-closing doors, make sure it works,” Nigro said.
