With parents threatening to keep their kids out of school because of the pandemic, just 82 percent of students showed up for class on Monday.
That would mark a significant drop in attendance from the 90 percent reported in 2019 before the pandemic began. The difference represents about 80,000 students.
Some parents have protested the return of full time in-person learning. There is no option for remote learning.
“I'm appealing to all parents right now, work past the fear, help your kids move forward, help your kids be safe and healthy in the place that's one of the safest places in New York City, our public schools,” de Blasio said.
