New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio believes Governor Andrew Cuomo will eventually resign due to sexual harassment allegations and an ongoing investigation into an alleged toxic workplace environment in his office.
De Blasio weighed in on the Cuomo scandal a day after a report from state Attorney General Letitia James found the governor violated state and federal laws with his conduct.
"If you assault a woman, you do something against her will sexually, that's criminal," de Blasio said Wednesday, responding to a Cuomo question from a reporter. "The Albany County District Attorney is looking at that, and I think he should be charged."
Albany County District Attorney David Soares announced Tuesday that his office was opening a "separate" criminal investigation into Cuomo, citing the AG report which concluded that the governor sexually harassed 11 women.
Speaking with MSNBC's Morning Joe, de Blasio added that he believes Cuomo will ultimately make a deal to resign in order to avoid prosecution "because impeachment is imminent."
Gov. Cuomo forcefully denied the claims in his attorney general's report, saying he "never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances. I am 63 years old. I've lived my entire adult life in public view. That is just not who I am."
De Blasio's statement comes as democrats continue to align against the New York governor. President Joe Biden also called for Cuomo's resignation Tuesday in the wake of the report.
