President Trump is on his way home from a largely successful trip to Japan. This, after meeting the new Japanese Emperor Naruhito [[nah-ROO-hee-TOH]] and holding a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe [[AH-bay]]. The President said it's critical for the two countries to work together.
Speaking to reporters, Trump and Abe said they are working together on several geopolitical issues, including how to deal with North Korea's nuclear program, rising tensions with Iran and trade deals. Trump said there could be some developments on a trade deal come August, but the trade ground between Japan and U.S. needs to be level first.
The President noted that Japan and the U.S. have never been on better terms and he's optimistic about the future. Trump thanked Abe and stressed it was a great honor for an American president to be the first world leader to meet Emperor Naruhito.
But where critics say the President missed the mark? Jabbing at Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden – and agreeing with the snark from North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un…that Biden “is a low IQ individual.” He also said he was unconcerned about the notion that Kim is launching low range missile tests.
"My people think it could have been a violation, as you know. I view it differently,” he mused. “I view it as a man, perhaps he wants to get attention, and perhaps not.” As for the rest, Trump says he’s fine with the status of the relationship with Kim. "I am very happy with the way it's going,” he noted. “And intelligent people agree.” He also praised Kim as a "smart man."
