Suspect Pulling Subway Emergency Brakes

Police are looking for a suspect, or a group of suspects, who have been pulling the emergency brakes on subways.

“This is stupid. It’s dangerous. It’s selfish and it’s gotta stop,” NYC Transit President Andy Byford said.

After pulling the brake, the suspect then flees the train and escapes into the subway tunnel. It’s already led to delays for thousands of commuters.

“It’s a double whammy because not only will you put a train into emergency - a train’s brakes going to emergency so the train’s stopped - they’re then running along the tracks. So we’re having to take the power off in order to find these idiots,” Byford said.

Those responsible are breaking into the operator’s car and pulling the emergency brake in there, not the one that’s available to riders. Byford believes they have a key.

“I would love to be able to catch these people.I would like them to face the consequences of their actions and I’d like to ban them from the subway,” Byford said.

The NYPD said the stunts are a danger and a risk to people. They're continuing their investigation.
