The usually peaceful Christian holiday of Easter turned horrific in Sri Lanka yesterday as a series of apparently coordinated bombings (nine in all), has left nearly 300 dead – and more than 400 injured. The death toll is expected to rise.
The bombings went off in churches and luxury hotels across the country. While no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks as yet, police have arrested two-dozen people in connection with the bombings.
The U.S. State Department has said that several Americans are among the dead – though they have not been identified. As for Americans planning to travel to the region, the State Department is warning tourists to “exercise increased caution,” saying “terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Sri Lanka.”
