Prosecutors in Los Angeles are charging celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti in a 36-count federal indictment. Avenatti has now been indicted by a federal grand jury for fraud, perjury, failure to pay taxes, embezzlement and other financial crimes.
The grand jury in Southern California believes that the former lawyer for porn star Stormy Daniels stole millions of dollars from five clients and used shell companies and bank accounts to cover it up. Specifically, in one specific case? Avenatti allegedly pilfered the $4-million award for a paraplegic man…in order to fund his personal ventures.
Of course, this latest announcement comes just days after Avenatti was hit with criminal complaints in L.A. and New York. He was arrested in New York for an alleged plot to extort money from Nike. Either way, Avenatti is declaring his innocence. Avenatti took to Twitter yesterday to deny stealing from clients and tweeted a statement signed by that disabled client, which praised him as an "honest and ethical attorney."
