Arizona Republican Senator Martha McSally has revealed that she was raped while she served in the military. McSally, the first female fighter pilot in the Air Force to fly in combat, started to choke up when recalling that the attack she says almost caused her to quit the service. McSally said she was raped by a superior officer.
Why the admission? It came during a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing on sexual assault in the military. McSally said she wanted to come forward with the revelation because she wanted to speak honestly with witnesses.
“I stayed silent for many years…I was horrified at how my attempt to share generally my experiences was handled,” she noted. “I almost separated from the Air Force at 18 years of service over my despair. Like many victims, I felt like the system was raping me all over again.”
