Will Smith had signed on to play Richard Williams– the father of Venus and Serena – in “King Richard.” While we have yet to hear from the tennis legends, several others are weighing in on the decision.
Apparently the rub is with Will’s skin color. The critics say that he’s too light-skinned to play the chocolate colored Williams. One said, “Will Smith is about to be the Scarlett Johansson of Black movies.” That statement was in reference to when she played an Asian character in “Ghost in the Shell.”Clarence Hill Jr. summed it up perfectly– “Colorism matters. Love Will Smith, but there are other Black actors for this role.”
So far, neither Will nor the Williams family has commented on this.
