“I listened to, and continue to listen to, that album religiously,” co-writer Marc Shaiman who wrote the new songs in the sequel to Mary Poppins says. “It taught me everything I know about songwriting.”
He and Scott Wittman wrote 25 new songs for the movie and according to Michael, they are great.
“Mary Poppins Returns” is set in 1930s London, during the Great Depression. Emily Blunt stars as the strict but loving nanny and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays a lamplighter, who once apprenticed under Bert, the chimney sweep. Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw play Jane and Michael Banks, the children in the original who are now adults. As Michael struggles to raise his three children after his wife’s death, Mary Poppins returns to No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane to tend to the stricken family."
