Renee Fleming Talks About Her Broadway Musical Debut

Renee Fleming says her first role in a Broadway musical has been “quite similar” to her opera performances.

Fleming, who is nominated for a Tony for her performance as Nettie Fowler in the Broadway revival of “Carousel,” talked with WOR’s “Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning.”

“The thing that’s really different is the fact that you have to do it every day,” Fleming said.

She said as an opera singer, she’s typically only performing twice a week.

Fleming said she plans to continue pursuing both forms of entertainment, saying she’s currently working with the Metropolitan Opera to create a new work that will debut in a couple years.  She also has tour dates planned for the Fall.

“It’s kind of mixed up at this point, very exciting,” Fleming said.

The Rodgers & Hammerstein musical “Carousel” is being performed at the Imperial Theatre.  The Tony Awards will take place on Sunday night.
