Harvey Weinstein Arrested on Sex Crime Charges

Former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein turned himself into police in New York City on Friday to face charges after allegations of sexual misconduct.

A large crowd of reporters gathered outside the first police precinct in Lower Manhattan where Weinstein surrendered just before 7:30 a.m.  He didn't speak as he entered the building.

He left the precinct around 9 a.m. after being charged with rape, criminal sex act, sexual abuse and sexual misconduct.  He was arraigned in Manhattan Supreme Court, where he agreed to post a $1 million bail and wear a monitoring device.

"Mr. Weinstein will enter a plea of not guilty.  We intend to move very quickly to dismiss these charges," Weinstein's attorney Benjamin Brafman said.

The charges come seven months after a series of allegations were made by women in an article by the New Yorker.  The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office began investigating the accusations of Lucia Evans and a second woman.

Evans claim that she was forced to perform oral sex on Weinstein, while the second woman alleges that she was raped.

“I said, over and over, ‘I don’t want to do this, stop, don’t,’ ” Evans told the New Yorker. “I tried to get away, but maybe I didn’t try hard enough. I  didn’t want to kick him or fight him.”

Weinstein has denied the allegations.

"Mr. Weinstein has always maintained that any sexual activity he engaged in was consensual.  He has vehemently denied any of the allegations which suggest that he engaged in non-consensual sexual activity," Brafman said.

In addition to the investigation here in New York City, federal authorities and police in Los Angeles are also investigating claims made against Weinstein.
