The New York City subways during the summer months are known to get incredibly hot and even reach dangerous levels at certain times. The latest effort to cool down the air involves taking out the hot air underground and repurposing it to heat water in nearby buildings, while simultaneously cooling down the stations and platforms. Natalie Migliore, WOR reporter, spoke with the people of NYC to find outRe how they feel about the ambitious plans.
“It sounds good in theory, but I’m always a little scared about the plans when it comes to the subway stations because sometimes it doesn’t work out or it turns into something we’re not thinking it is,” one person told Migliore. “I don’t know how they’re able to do that but I like how they’re trying to find new ways to do that kind of stuff,” another person told Migliore.
One person thinks the changes are important for the safety of the more vulnerable subway riders: “The older generation that may have any underlying conditions where the heat could cause them to pass out; so that would be incredible if an opportunity were to be presented for us to be in a more ventilated train station or platform.”
