"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has swung into box office history with a stunning $355 million domestic opening weekend, just shy of the record set by "Avengers: Endgame." The film, featuring Tom Holland and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, also amassed $927 million globally, marking the second-largest opening in box office history.
The film's success is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Spider-Man franchise. According to Deadline, "Brand New Day" had a record-breaking $72 million in previews, surpassing previous records held by "Avengers: Endgame." The film's strong performance was bolstered by a heat wave across the West, South, and Central States, driving audiences into air-conditioned theaters.
The film's global success is also notable, with $572 million in international sales, including $121 million from China, as reported by CNBC. The film's release coincides with a rebound in movie attendance, with summer ticket sales up at least 10% compared to last year.
Sony and Marvel's strategy of focusing on character-driven storytelling, as highlighted by Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has resonated with audiences. Feige stated, "This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world."
With its remarkable opening, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" sets the stage for a promising August and contributes to what is expected to be the biggest summer in terms of revenue since 2019.
