The New York City Department of Transportation announced plans to install 25 e-bike battery swapping stations across the city by 2027. These stations aim to support delivery workers and reduce fire risks associated with unsafe battery charging practices. According to NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, the initiative is part of the "Charge Safe, Ride Safe" blueprint, which seeks to improve working conditions and ensure safer charging practices for delivery workers.
Since 2022, lithium-ion batteries have caused 900 fires in New York City, resulting in 30 deaths and 400 injuries. The new battery-swapping cabinets will offer a safer alternative to home charging, featuring fire suppression features and real-time battery health monitoring. The Fire Department of New York supports this initiative, emphasizing the importance of safe charging infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
The DOT plans to place these stations in neighborhoods with high delivery traffic, including most of Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Long Island City, and parts of the South Bronx. Delivery workers will be able to access these stations through a paid membership, with details to be announced later. The first installations are expected in 2027, following utility upgrades planned for 2026.
While some criticize the slow pace of implementation, the DOT remains committed to expanding the network. The city is also working on an e-bike trade-in program and has established "microhubs" to promote sustainable delivery methods.
