In the race for New York City mayor, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani made headlines with his statements on the recent release of Israeli hostages. While Republican Curtis Sliwa and Independent Democrat Andrew Cuomo focused on the hostages' return, Mamdani addressed broader issues, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He described the release as "profoundly moving" but also criticized U.S. support for Israel, stating, "We have watched as our tax dollars have funded a genocide." Mamdani called for an end to "occupation and apartheid" in the region.

Mamdani's comments have sparked controversy, especially among his political rivals. According to the New York Post, City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov and State Assemblyman Sam Berger criticized Mamdani for not mentioning Hamas in his statements. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo emphasized the moral significance of the hostages' release, calling it a "moral moment."

Mamdani's statements align with the views of the Democratic Socialists of America, a party with which he has close ties. The DSA recently criticized the Gaza ceasefire, arguing it does not address the underlying issues. According to the Times of Israel, the DSA accused Israel of "genocide" and "apartheid," and expressed solidarity with Palestinian resistance.

As reported by the New York Times, Mamdani has been a vocal critic of Israel's actions in Gaza, labeling them as a "genocidal war." With the mayoral election approaching, his stance on these issues has become a focal point, drawing both support and criticism from different segments of New York City's diverse population.
