Police are searching for a suspect after a 13-year-old boy was shot in the head in Queens, New York, on Monday. The incident occurred in the parking lot of a Dunkin' Donuts on Linden Boulevard in Cambria Heights around 8:21 a.m. The victim was taken to Cohen Children's Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the suspect approached the boy and his friends on a scooter, pulled out a gun, and shot the victim before fleeing the scene. Police described the suspect as a man with an afro, wearing a white hoodie, white sneakers, and a backpack with the word "Jaws" on it.
NBC New York reported that the shooting happened as children were heading to school. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities are investigating whether the victim was the intended target. A backpack believed to belong to the shooter was recovered at the scene, which is located near three schools.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "There is nothing more devastating than yet another child becoming a victim of senseless gun violence." The community is reminded of a similar tragedy in 2009 when 13-year-old Kevin Miller was shot and killed in the same area. The section of Linden Boulevard where the shooting occurred is named after him.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
