Europe Comes To The White House Hoping To Find An End To The Ukraine War

On Friday, Putin came to Alaska to discuss a cease fire in Ukraine. Only a few days later, several other European leaders came to the White House to discuss peace. The discussion means haggling over the small details, and that is where any talk of peace can easily fly off the rails; however, they are talking, and that is step one. WOR White House correspondent Jon Decker has been shadowing President Trump since the summit began in Anchorage only a few days ago; he appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to try to answer the question everybody wants answered soon.

“It’s a really good question, what comes next,” Decker posed for host Larry Mendte. “Now, is it a bilateral summit between Zelenskyy and Putin? Is it a trilateral summit involving President Trump as well, as the mediator? That is uncertain at this moment. Certainly a lot of pressure will be brought to bear on President Putin to meet with President Zelensky? Where? When? That’s uncertain, and that pressure is going to be brought to bear, not only by President Trump, who’s got a good relationship with President Putin, but other world leaders as well that would like to see this war end after more than three years of it starting back in February of 2022.”

To further bolster the mood at the White House, Decker says many European leaders appear to want peace, though privately they might not be sure it can happen: “Yesterday we heard from the German chancellor, Chancellor Mertz. We heard from the French President, Macron, and both of them indicated they would like to see a cease-fire. They think a cease-fire is necessary just to get to the point of a permanent peace… but of course, we don’t know what is said behind closed doors, when the press isn’t in the room.”
